Photos that made 2018
A lot has happened in 2018.But nothing captures this most avidly than frozen moments of memorable times as captured through the lens. Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second.
The photos given below are not necessarily the best of 2018.But we believe that they, in a way, create an artful and impactful visual narrative, and give readers an honest glimpse into experience vastly different from their own.
To that end, we take a look at 2018 as seen through lens, if not immortalized. Here we go:
1. The Handshake
Picture this: In February, the son of Jaramogi swears himself in as the President when we have a sitting President. The nation holds its breath, expecting the son of Jomo to haul him to jail for high treason. Instead, in March, the two hold a meeting and pledge to work together. The photograph came as a big surprise for the followers of the two sons of great Kenyans who were thought to be sworn enemies all along.
2. The Murang’a Elephant Man
This unnamed man was captured chasing away two jumbos from his farm in Murang’a after they wandered there from the Aberdares. The photos dazzling quality lies in the spontaneity of the moment.
3.The Mandera Child
This image of a health worker from Mandera giving polio dose to a child in his home-a camel on the go-was a sure winner. It not only captures some of the travails that health workers go through in a day’s work-but challenges us to redefine ‘home’. The photo also captures something that all good photos should have-the humanity of the moment.
4. Meru elephant man
Boda boda riders are known for their swashbuckling ways in the streets, but this one had to stop and give way to the jumbo. This was captured along the Meru- Nanyuki road which passes through Imenti forest-home to hundreds of animals.
The confident stride of the jumbo leaves no question as to who is the boss here.
5.Uhuru and Celina
In 2018, the nation lost one of its trailblazing benga artistes-Joseph Kamaru. His funeral in Murang’a was attended by who is who in the country. But what caught everybody’s attention was that hearty tete-a tete between the President and Celina-Kamarus sister. It was so cordial that the crowd had to notice and burst in laughter.
6. The two laughing loving Simbas
These pictures were taken by 49-year-old photographer Rose Fleming from South Carolina, who says she was surprised by the behavior of the wild cats and the impression, as if the lions are laughing at a joke told. This was in Maasai Mara National Park.
Rose Fleming later said that it appeared like the two lions appear to be ‘roaring with laughter’ after sharing a ‘private joke’ while taking a leisurely stroll at the park.
But its true- with their noses scrunched up and tongues out, the two big cats look like they were having a hearty laugh as they stroll through the world famous national park.
8.Trump meets Kim
Kim and Trump meet for their very first official handshake to kick off the nuclear summit. It’s the first time a sitting US president has met face to face with a North Korean leader.
The meeting between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore was one of the most significant moments in world diplomacy in recent history.
It was also one of the most surreal.
Less than a year ago, Trump was threatening to rain down “fire and fury like the world has never seen” on North Korea, and Kim was calling Trump a “mentally deranged US dotard” and “carefully examining” plans for a missile strike on US military bases in Guam.
That’s what makes the images from Trump’s summit with Kim so striking.

10.The rope of Saddam
The rope said to have been used to execute former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is in the Baghdad home of Mowaffak al-Rubaie, who witnessed the hanging.
